Lethal Verbal Combat

Joel Achenbach develops his funny bone at his Washington Post blog. Yesterday, in The Tempest, he went a different direction to analyze political and scientific conflicts on environmental issues. This bit got my attention: LET US BE HONEST about the intellectual culture of America in general: It has become almost impossible to have an intelligent… Continue reading »

Oklahoma Can't BREAK Out-of-State Adoptions; BAN Still in Place

Good As You points out that Focus on the Family is using a shadowy waif-like girl (Oliver Twist’s sister?) as the face of the gay adoption. The writer of the Focus headline (Judge Strikes Down Oklahoma Gay-Adoption Ban) doesn’t get the simple point that gay adoption is still banned. Focus also doesn’t get that the… Continue reading »

Cohen's Ex-Gay Therapy: Bash Mom, Hug a Man

On Paula Zahn’s CNN show tonight, Richard Cohen demonstrates key aspects of the reparative therapy he practices. He sits upright on a sofa, his client sprawls lengthwise for a close chest-to-chest embrace. The reporter does a sanity-check, asking the client if he feels aroused. Nope, just safe. Cohen, saying that another key technique is designed… Continue reading »

The Trouble With Numbers

My partner pointed out that I mis-counted a few posts back when I said that my prior partner died four and a half years ago. Nope, nope, nope… November of 2000 was five and a half years ago. But, that’s the trouble with numbers. They can get away from you. And, I’m not surprised that… Continue reading »

A Traditional Marriage?

When the anti-gay folks get worked up about the need to preserve what they perceive to be traditional about marriage, I’ve cited Anna Nicole Smith and J. Howard Marshall. Their marriage, after all, was one guy, one girl. The laws of the land conveyed as much approval and sanction as they do toward the Falwells,… Continue reading »

Natala and Marie

In meandering around the web tonight, I came across an 8-part piece written by Natala about a friendship with Marie which started in college and evolved over the years. Titled “porn star”, it begins with their first meeting when Natala was a new r.a. at the dorm and Marie a resident: “i’m into porn” she… Continue reading »

Anti-Family Oklahoma Law Struck Down

Terrance at The Republic of T points out that federal judge Robin Cauthron has struck down an Oklahoma statute that had invalidated existing adoptions granted to same-sex parents in other states. The judge’s ruling (PDF) is available online. It appears to be one of those things that has been readily misconstrued. Jurist, a legal website… Continue reading »

Grace's Question

Grace, at Willful Grace asked a good question last week: Here’s a question. Please comment. Let me know what you think about this. What if…..we are born not really sexually attracted to any certain gender in particular. What if…..we are born with certain personality traits and temperament… and… according to the way we are raised… Continue reading »

I wish…

…that anyone struggling with sexual orientation and religious issues could get a clear message from ex-gay ministries and gay-affirming folks alike: We want you to survive, first and foremost, take care of yourself, and be healthy. With that, you’ll have the chance (time, energy, intellect) to work through whatever else you need to do. I… Continue reading »

What is Real About Exodus, Randy?

Philadelphia Gay News has published piece on ex-gays which includes thoughtful quotes by a formerly ex-gay couple, Dan Gonzales, Wayne Besen, and Peterson Toscano. It also quotes Randy Thomas of Exodus International. The article is too brief to dig into a lot of detail; that brevity raises some questions in my mind.
